The mindset, money, and moves to go all in—without burning out
Ever feel like you’re building your dream practice… in the cracks of your week?
Clients often ask me how I got started—especially when they’re secretly wondering, “Could I do this too?”
When I first wrote this blog two years ago, I was just starting to find my feet in business. Now, in 2025, with therapy demand rising and the cost of living squeezing so many, it feels like the perfect time to revisit it.
44% rise in BACP student registrations (2019–2023)
65% increase in demand for private counselling in just two years
1 in 4 people in the UK now use CAM therapies annually
Therapy is now a standard workplace benefit
The NHS is scaling up its Talking Therapies workforce
Nearly 40% of Brits now juggle a side hustle to manage rising costs
More people are training. More people are seeking support. And if you’re already running a part-time practice, this could be your time to go all in.
The Therapy Boom: Why This Industry’s Not Slowing Down
This isn’t a “nice little sideline” anymore. It’s a vital, valued profession—and people are looking for what you do.
Don’t Get Stuck in the Learn – Don’t-Earn Loop
I see this all the time (and I’ve been there myself). Another course, another training, another certificate…
But the truth is: you don’t need another qualification to begin.
Of course, ethical training and supervision matter. But if you’re endlessly adding letters after your name and still undercharging or invisible online—that’s not learning, it’s hiding.
What you really need is:
• A clear offer
• A way for people to find you
• The belief that you’re ready now
Learn as you earn. Serve while you grow.
Price for Transformation, Not Just Time
One of the biggest mindset shifts? You’re not charging for the hour. You’re charging for the outcome.
That hour includes:
• Prep
• Notes
• Emotional presence
• Aftercare
• And years of training and lived experience
Don’t undersell your value. You’re not “just a therapist.” You’re someone helping people change their lives.
Get a Mentor Who’s Walked the Path
I’ve had brilliant mentors over the years. Some helped with strategy. Others with mindset. All helped me see what I couldn’t on my own.
You don’t have to go it alone—or reinvent the wheel.
“Your business can only grow as fast as you do.” — Tony Robbins
Build a Network That Refers You
I used to think networking was awkward and salesy. Now? I see it as relationship-building.
Groups like BNI, The Growth Community, or local business meetups have helped me:
• Refine my message
• Meet referrers
• Grow my confidence
Networking isn’t about pitching—it’s about teaching people who you help and how they can refer you.
There Is Funding—You Just Need to Ask
When I trained as an MHFA Instructor, I received support through Sheffield Launchpad. That investment made a big difference.
Your local area likely has:
• Small business grants
• Skills funding
• Startup support
Ask your Growth Hub or council’s business team. You don’t need to do it all alone.
Know When to Rest, Not Quit
This work is personal and powerful—but it’s also intense.
You’ll wear a lot of hats. Therapist. Bookkeeper. Content creator. Admin.
Here’s what I’ve learned:
• Rest is strategic
• Boundaries are essential
• Hiring help is an investment, not a luxury
You are your business’s biggest asset. Protect your energy.
Final Thoughts
When I walked into that PR agency years ago and was told, “This is just a lifestyle business,” I felt small.
But I wasn’t building a hobby. I was building a healing, sustainable, real business.
If you’re somewhere in that in-between space right now—juggling sessions between school runs, or second-guessing your pricing—please know this:
You don’t need to wait for the perfect time.
You don’t need to have it all figured out.
You just need to believe that what you’ve built is already enough to start.
You’re not alone. And you’re more ready than you think.
PS
Thinking about going full-time or pricing your sessions with confidence?
I’m planning a small, supportive group or resource to help therapists shift from “just enough” to sustainable income and real impact.
If you’re curious, send me a quick DM or email with the word “READY” and I’ll keep you in the loop.
