What you will be able to do
Notice what may be changing. Know how to respond.
Mental ill health rarely arrives with a label. It may first appear through withdrawal, irritability, mistakes, reduced confidence, presenteeism or a change in someone’s energy. This course gives you a practical framework for responding without judgement, panic or overstepping your role.
Recognise possible signs
Notice changes in communication, behaviour, energy and performance that may indicate someone needs support.
Start a safer conversation
Use clear, human language to check in without diagnosing, making assumptions or forcing disclosure.
Listen without judgement
Practise active listening, empathy and reassurance so the person feels heard rather than rushed or fixed.
Guide people towards help
Encourage appropriate professional, workplace or crisis support when someone may need additional help.
Maintain boundaries
Understand confidentiality, role limitations and when safeguarding or escalation procedures apply.
Protect your own wellbeing
Recognise the impact of supporting others and use reflection, self-care and support after difficult conversations.
Clear role boundaries
Support people without trying to become their therapist.
An MHFAider® offers responsible initial support. The role does not replace clinical care, HR, occupational health, safeguarding or emergency services.

Before you request a place
Clear answers to the practical questions.
The course covers serious subjects. It is reasonable to understand the commitment, boundaries and support before joining.
View current course dates →Do I need previous mental health training?
No. You do not need to be a clinician, counsellor or mental health specialist. The course is designed to help ordinary people provide responsible initial support while understanding the limits of the role.
Must I attend every live session?
Yes. Participants must attend and take part in all four live sessions. Full participation is required to complete the course and receive the digital Certificate of Attendance and three-year MHFAider® support.
Will I have to share personal experiences?
No. You will be invited to participate but will not be pressured to disclose personal experiences. A group learning agreement supports privacy, boundaries and respectful participation.
Is there a test or examination?
There is no pass-or-fail examination within the standard course. Learning activities and short knowledge checks help consolidate understanding. The optional RSPH Level 3 Award is a separate qualification route with its own assessment and fee.
Can accessibility or learning requirements be accommodated?
Please share any accessibility, communication or learning requirements when checking availability. Mike will contact you before the course to discuss reasonable adjustments that may support your participation.
