Official MHFA England Refresher Course
MHFA Refresher Training that renews more than your certificate. It renews your confidence.
If someone needed your support tomorrow, would you feel as confident using your Mental Health First Aid skills as you did when you first completed your training?
Knowledge changes. Skills can fade. In one focused four-hour session, you will refresh your skills, revisit the MHFA action plan and renew the confidence to support someone calmly, safely and without stepping beyond your role.
Your eligibility and place will be confirmed by email before an invoice is issued.
Check before you book
Is the MHFA Refresher course right for me?
This is a renewal course—not the starting point. It is designed for people who already hold eligible Mental Health First Aid training and want to keep their knowledge, confidence and certification current.
Yes—this is probably for you
You are an existing MHFAider®
You completed an MHFA England Mental Health First Aid course and your certification is approaching its three-year renewal point.
- Your certification is approaching three years
- You want to refresh your practical skills
- You want to renew your confidence and knowledge
- Your certificate expired within the last six months

You trained with another provider
You may still be eligible if you hold an approved Level 3 mental health first-aid qualification from another recognised provider.
Eligibility depends on the specific qualification awarded, not simply the name of the training organisation. Mike will check this with you before you book.
New to Mental Health First Aid?
Begin with the complete MHFA course
The Refresher does not replace the complete Mental Health First Aid programme.
If you have not completed eligible previous training, the full two-day MHFA England course will give you the knowledge, framework and practical skills you need.
Still unsure? Do not guess or book the wrong course. Contact Mike with the name and date of your previous qualification, and he will help you establish the right next step.
Renew the confidence to respond
Knowing the theory is one thing. Feeling ready to use it is another.
The Refresher is not about sitting through everything again. It gives you the opportunity to reconnect with your skills, practise the conversations that matter and feel prepared to respond.
Every group brings something different
Real experiences. Honest conversations. Practical learning.
When I deliver this course, there is always a mixture of experience in the room. Some people have already used their MHFA skills in difficult conversations at work or while supporting a friend or family member.
Many have not yet needed to use their training and may be wondering whether they would remember what to say if that moment came. Both experiences matter.
Those who choose to share often tell heartfelt stories about the difference their training made: having the confidence to begin a conversation, knowing what to say—and what not to say—and being able to signpost someone towards appropriate support.
Recognise
Notice when something may be wrong
Refresh your awareness of the signs that someone may be experiencing poor mental health and consider how to approach them early, calmly and appropriately.
Listen
Begin a supportive conversation
Revisit active listening and empathy so you feel more confident opening a conversation, allowing space and responding without judgement or trying to provide every answer.
Signpost
Help someone find appropriate support
Update your knowledge of support routes and practise how to encourage someone towards professional help and other appropriate resources.
Protect
Maintain boundaries and look after yourself
Revisit confidentiality, the boundaries of the MHFAider® role and the importance of protecting your own wellbeing while supporting other people.
You are not expected to diagnose, treat or fix anyone.
Your role is to be a confident first point of support: to recognise, listen, reassure and signpost while staying safely within the boundaries of your training.
Why train with Mike?
The course is standardised. The experience is personal.
You are not simply choosing a course. You are choosing the person who will create the space, guide the conversations and help you turn knowledge into confidence.
Lolade Dyson reflects on her experience of Mental Health First Aid training with Mike Lawrence.

Before you enquire
MHFA Refresher training: your questions answered.
Clear answers to the questions people most often ask before renewing their MHFAider skills and certification.
Who is the MHFA Refresher course for?
It is for people who have already completed eligible Mental Health First Aid training and want to refresh their knowledge, practical skills and confidence. It is a renewal course rather than an introduction to Mental Health First Aid.
Can I attend if I trained with another provider?
You may be eligible if you hold an approved Level 3 mental health first-aid qualification from another recognised provider.
Eligibility depends on the qualification awarded, rather than simply the name of the training organisation. Mike will check your course title, provider and completion date before you book.
What if my MHFAider certificate has expired?
The MHFA England Refresher should normally be completed within three years of your original course or within six months after your certification expires.
If it expired longer ago, send Mike the details of your previous training. He will help you establish whether the Refresher or the complete MHFA course is the appropriate route.
Is this an official MHFA England course?
Yes. This is the official four-hour MHFA England Refresher course, delivered live by Mike Lawrence, an MHFA England Instructor Member.
What will I receive after completing the course?
Successful completion refreshes your MHFAider® knowledge and renews your certification for another three years. You will also reconnect with the MHFA action plan, support routes and resources connected to your role.
Is the course online or available in person?
The next public course is delivered live online through Zoom. Private workplace courses can be arranged online or delivered in person at a suitable client venue.
Will I have to share personal experiences?
No. The course creates space for discussion and practical learning, but you will never be pressured to disclose personal information or experiences. You can participate in a way that feels appropriate and psychologically safe for you.
What happens after I submit an enquiry?
Mike will review your enquiry, confirm your eligibility and check availability. Once your place or private course arrangements have been agreed, you will receive confirmation and an invoice.
You will not be asked to pay before your place has been confirmed.
Still unsure? Use the enquiry form below and tell Mike about your previous course. He will help you identify the right next step before you make any commitment.
