The Building Is Not the Support

Your people may not say they are struggling

A short August reflection on hidden pressure, honest conversations and practical support before stress becomes a crisis.

Your people may not say they are struggling.
The workplace usually says it first.

Silence. Tension. Mistakes. Low energy. Absence. Managers unsure whether to step in – or what to say if they do.

Workplace wellbeing should change what happens on Monday – not simply create applause on Friday.

Hi Reader,

Welcome to this month’s newsletter – and thank you, as always, for opening and reading.

I genuinely appreciate it. A few of you have said recently that you look forward to these monthly reflections, and that means a lot. There is already enough noise landing in people’s inboxes, so I never take your time or attention for granted.

This month, I keep coming back to one simple idea:

people do not always tell you they are under pressure. Often, the workplace tells you first.

It shows up in the small things. A shift in tone. A missed detail. Someone who used to contribute now staying quiet. A manager who senses something is off, but is not sure whether to ask.

These are not always performance problems. Sometimes they are early signs that pressure is becoming harder to hide.

That is why the new website now puts workplace pressure points at the centre of the conversation. Not because every difficult moment is a crisis, but because noticing earlier gives people a better chance of responding well.

Notice the signals before they become the story

Silence, tension, mistakes, absence and low energy are easy to explain away. The better question is: what might they be telling you about pressure, workload and confidence inside the team?

Mental Health First Aid – when good intentions are not enough

Most people do not freeze in a mental health moment because they do not care. They freeze because they are unsure what to say. Training gives people a recognised framework, clearer boundaries and confidence to respond humanly when it matters.

A question for leaders and managers

Where are people in your organisation explaining pressure away?

“They are quiet because they are busy.” “They made mistakes because the week was hectic.” “Absence is just part of the season.” Sometimes that may be true.

But sometimes those explanations delay the conversation that would have helped.

You do not need to turn managers into counsellors. But they do need enough confidence to notice change, ask carefully, listen properly and know what support routes exist.

If there is one thing I would leave you with this month, it is this:

Do not confuse functioning with being okay.

People can still be replying, delivering, smiling and showing up while quietly running low.
